Johnson's Island

On Sunday morning we took a trip to Johnson's Island to visit the cemetery at the Confederate Prisoner of War Camp there.
In April, 1862 Union Officials opened the prison which had been designed to hold up to 2,500 Confederate Officers. By January 1864  there were 3224 prisoners:  Confederate officers, some privates, and some civilians suspected of having Confederate sympathies.  By the end of the war more than 200 prisoners had died.  After the war the camp was dismantled and the buildings were sold off.  All that remains today is a cemetery.  Click on this link to find out more about the deaths and burials on the island.

There are at least 3 boys from the 5th Kentucky buried  in the cemetery.
